AFF Day 3 and 4

Categories: Uncategorized

I’m so tired. This weekend really tried me. But I did a lot of fun stuff  (and missed some good things because of the fun stuff–yikes).

On Saturday I went to the premiere of the 10x10 videos. Ten local filmmakers are paired with ten local bands and artists to create a music video, with NO money, in five days. I was so floored when I saw the results. The crazy digital effects, hand-drawn animation, and beautiful cinematography really impressed me.

In particular, I ask that you watch this video and click “like” (there is a contest among the participants–the likes help choose a winner). The aforementioned video is the soulful Chad Hatcher’s “Live by the Sea.” You will love it. Give ‘er a like.

The weirdest thing about this music video screening was that Billy Boyd was in the audience. Yes, Pippin. And when I got the Oxford to see Take This Waltz, Boyd followed. Somewhat surreal for a wee nerd like myself.

Take This Waltz was beautiful, heartbreaking, and funny. I loved it. When I left the theatre I yelled at a pal “I have so many feelings!” That is as much of a review as I want to give this film, as it felt too raw and personal.

I was supposed to see a few other movies that night, but…

I found a party with an open bar that was catered by Hamachi House where I met one of my current favourite musicians, the lovely Carmen Townsend. Then I stumbled down to the Telefilm party. And then the Carleton. And then to bed. Phew.

On Sunday, I caught the very good documentary Darwin. Darwin is a tiny town in California with just 35 residents. The film told the story of the almost-gh0st-town with emphasis on the stories of the odd and endearing people who choose to live there. There are equal parts laughs and tragedies. It was hard to believe after a point that the people in the film were real and not actors. Worth tracking down, though it might be tough.

After Darwin, I went to Atlantic Shorts 4 which featured 11 short films from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland. As with every short film showcase I’ve ever been to, I loved some and hated others.

Some favourites of mine were Michael Doucette’s Sandwich Crazy, Pardis Parker’s The Dance, and Jillian Acreman’s The Editor.

Today I’m going to see the much-anticipated Take Shelter. I am ridiculously excited to see this movie. Expect a write-up tomorrow!
