2012 Movie Picks

Categories: Uncategorized

It’s a fresh new year with what seems like an equal amount of awesome and terrible movies set to hit the big screen. Actually, let’s be honest, it will probably be more bad than good, but the excellent ones tend to make up for that.

I’m excited for quite a few movies this year, but these babies are movies I’d line up to see opening night:

PROMETHEUS

What’s up, Ridley Scott? Wanna make a sweet looking scary space movie about the origins of humanity? Swell. I’m in. Featuring your 2011 boyfriend, Michael Fassbender, continuing on his path of awesomeness. The trailer to this movie is so good I’ve been known to watch it on repeat. Prometheus is definitely my most anticipated film of the year,

HUNGER GAMES

Because I read the books and, dare I say it, we need a new YA franchise to obsess over now that Harry Potter is on the way out. Gary Ross is an unusual director for this, but the trailer looks great and I like the casting.  I *might* not see this opening weekend due to the fan girl effect, but it is a definite must-see.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Speaking of Harry. The 1989 original made-for-TV British film has one of the scariest moments ever. EVER. Hopefully this remake stays creepy. Radcliffe plays a young lawyer who travels to a wee town where ghosts are causing trouble.

DJANGO UNCHAINED

O hai, Mr. Tarantino. Plot synopsis of Django Unchained: With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner. Plot synopsis of the 1966 film Django: A coffin-dragging gunslinger enters a town caught between two feuding factions, the KKK and a gang of Mexican Bandits, and is caught up in a struggle against them. HMMMMMM!

WORLD WAR Z

A post-apocalyptic zombie horror based on the book by Max Brooks. I can’t handle how good this could be. Brad Pitt plays the Gerry Lane character, a UN representative who interviews survivors of “World War Z.”

THE INNKEEPERS

This is technically a 2011 movie, but it’s finally getting a wider release this year. Ti West is one of my favourite “new” directors and I’ve been yearning to see this for a while. It follows two employees of an inn that is closing who seek to prove that the place is super-haunted. I’m going to guess and say they’re probably right.

SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D

Don’t judge, but I loved the first Silent Hill movie. And the games. Nerd alert. Chances are this won’t be as good as the first one, but I’m still excited. I’m actually surprised that it took this long to come out with another SH film. This time, the Harry Mason character of the first and third games is the star.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

This movie has been kicking around for YEARS and seems weirdly similar to THE CORRIDOR, but Joss Whedon + horror = I’m there. Check out this beautiful synopsis: Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen. …amazing.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

I want to see Abe Lincoln fight vampires, OK? Especially vampires with slave-owners as side-kicks. What?

THE LORDS OF SALEM

OK, first listen to this. Yeaaaah. I’m pumped for Rob Zombie’s third original feature. Let’s forget about the Halloween movies and get excited for this. It’s about a DJ who unwittingly unleashes 300-year old witches who I’m certain will be looking to cause some trouble. Lords of Salem is the third film from Haunted Films, the first two being Paranormal Activity and Insidious.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

BATMAN! C’MON!!!!

THE AVENGERS

THE AVENGERS! YEAH!!

*EDIT*

We have another one.

SILENT HOUSE

IMDB sez: Trapped inside her family’s lakeside retreat, a young woman descends into madness. I say: this movie was done in one shot (supposedly) and roles out in real-time. I liked the original 2010 film from Uruguay which was made for a mere $6,000, so I’m interested in seeing what this will look like with a budget.

OK, Internet. What movies are you excited to see this year? Please tell me. I want to know!

  1. I want to see all of these. Plus Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (I’ll watch Gary Oldman in anything — but especially in a spy movie) and the Great Gatsby with Leo DiCaprio & Carey Mulligan.

  2. I agree with you entirely about World War Z. I love Brad Pitt and I love zombies so combining the two has such potential for awesomeness. I can’t think about it or my brain might explode from anticipation.
